One of our recent projects gave us an opportunity to use and expand our signage experience. Our client, Walter Hansel Wine and Bistro, requested an exterior sign for their restaurant vegetable garden 'Le Jardin.' They wanted a sign large enough to see from the highway, but they wanted a specific rustic look. The sign needed to look antique or used, but using old wood products and hand lettering would be too costly. We were happy to take on the challenge of finding the best products that were right for their budget while still getting the correct look and feel for this project. To create the antique effect we took advantage of our incredible team of graphic artists and trained sign makers we have here at Wine Country Signs in Santa Rosa. These hardworking employees were able to find and manipulate the color of a stock photo with just the right 3D look to make this sign look antique and worn around the edges. Using their training in traditional sign-making techniques, these employees were able to reproduce the look and feel of an old-fashioned wooden sign while using modern materials. The materials we used were crucial to the success of this project. We printed the photo onto exterior grade Medium Density Overlay, or signboard, using our HP Scitex FB500, UV Ink printer.
For those of you who are not as deep into signage as we are at Wine Country Signs, Medium Density Overlay, also known as MDO or signboard, is a type of plywood with an enameled white face that provides a smooth surface perfect for printing. It works well for exterior use as it is water-proof and made to endure inclement weather. The painted face helps prevent the wood grain from creating bumps during the process of application or printing on the surface of the plywood.
This combination of MDO and direct to substrate printing allowed us to create a sign that looks just like a worn down wooden sign but will have a much longer life. As with all our projects, we did our research and chose the most effective material for this wooden sign. Whether we're working on signs, banners, vehicles wraps, or utilizing one of our other skills, we always do our best to make the job of our clients that much easier.
